One of the reasons why so many people choose to hunt with Omatako Hunting Trails is that one stays within the picturesque setting of the actual hunting area, which saves an enormous amount of travel time. All the huntable species belong to us and therefore, one doesn't need to worry about the quota system. By Namibian law one is allowed to hunt 2 trophy animals per species.
Species available on Omatako Hunting Trails are:
Sable, Waterbuck, Damara Dik Dik, Eland, kudu, Oryx, Black wildebeest, Blue Wildebeest, Hartman Zebra, Burchell Zebra, Giraffe, Red hartebeest, Common Impala, Springbuck, Blackbuck, Steenbok, Common Duiker, warthog Ostrich, Baboon and predators like Leopard, Cheetah, Caracal, Brown Hyena.
On Sandputz, the available species are:
Oryx, Dik Dik, Kudu, Warthog, Springbuck, Steenbok, Duiker and Predators like Leopard, Caracal, Cheetah. Sandputz is the best hunting area to hunt Kudu.
On request other species may be hunted in different concessions if booked in advance. Please enquire about species you are looking for when booking. Note that good game birds are also available when in season - depending on the time of year.
Omatako Ranch was selected from only a few farms in Namibia by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (M.E.T) to host Black Rhino under a custodianship program. The Rhino are often spotted and make for beautiful and exciting viewing but is not available for hunting.
HUNTING AREAS
Hunting is done in the central and northwestern part of Namibia, 1h30 north of the capital city, Windhoek. Omatako, the main hunting area, is part of the Ombotozu conservancy, with more than 800 000 acres. Most of the hunting is done on Omatako, which has 22 huntable game species available. If need be, depending on the circumstances, one can also hunt in the conservancy with permission of the owner.
On Sandputz 1h30 north west of Omatako we have a tented camp, from where we like to hunt Kudu. Other species available on Sandputz are Oryx, Dik Dik, Springbok, Warthog, Leopard, Caracal, Steenbok and duiker.
The advantage of hunting with Omatako is that one saves a lot of time travelling between hunting areas and of course you're not restricted to hunting quotas. On the hunt you will be guided by a team of Ph's, which includes myself, Johan jnr and Obet. If more Ph's are required we make use of a freelance PH who is familiar with the area to be hunted.
Our hunting season officially starts on the 1st of February until the end of November. For rifle hunting, the best hunting time is from the beginning of May till late September, and for bow hunters, the best time is from July to November. Because moonlight effects the movement of animals at night it is thought best for bow hunters to book at dark moon.
